While MS Visual Studio Code is listed, I prefer to use any simple code editor, as long as it has auto-indents and highlighting. I have used Visual Studio, Android Studio and other task-specific editors in the past.

Paint.NET is my reliable go-to image editing software - it does everything I need and is free. I have used Adobe Photoshop and other free image editors in the past.
